The more subtle stuff, like damaged but not broken valves, would need a head strip to check. I would suggest that you ask the mechanic to start the belt change, see if everything rotates as it should. If not, you need to re-evaluate. If it does, head off to check the state of play in there. If all OK, back together and off you go.
Just hit 50,000 miles and without having to ask my dealer in fear of being ripped off I'm trying to find out when the timing belt needs replacing as I can't seem to find anything in the owners handbook or service book. Done a few Google searches and the general consensus appears to be 50K/5 years or 100K/10 years (whichever comes first) though
